Now that I’ve had a chance to catch my breath after settling into the “back to school/back to work” routine, I’ve started to think about activities I can enjoy this fall. Part of my planning has included looking at what Caledon Hills Bruce Trail Club has planned over the next few months. We’ve got lots of activities lined up, so if you’re like me, you’re sure to find a number of things that capture your interest.
As always, there’s our amazing fall hiking schedule. Some of you will be excited to hear we have a Discovery Badge Blitz starting this Sunday, September 22nd. If you’re new to hiking or enjoy a more leisurely pace, you’ll be glad to hear we have a few Introductory hikes planned this fall, too.
If you want to explore the flora and fauna of the Caledon Hills section more, or capture the stunning beauty of autumn colours that we’re so lucky to experience in this part of the country, you’ll have a number of opportunities to do so through our three photography hikes. You can join CHBTC’s Land Steward Coordinator Gary Hall as he takes you on a photography hike in the Forks of the Credit Provincial Park on October 3rd or again on October 17th in the Quarryside Nature Reserve. Former CHBTC Land Steward Coordinator Hamish Duthie is also leading a photography hike, and you can join him in Mono Cliffs Provincial Park on October 10th.
You can see all the other hikes we have planned on our General Hikes and Tuesday Hikes webpages. And while you’re planning your hikes for October, why not think about using them to help you reach your kilometre goal in this year’s BTC Hike-a-Thon? Never participated in the Hike-a-Thon before? Maybe this is the year to be a part of something fun that also gives back to something you value: ‘preserving a ribbon of wilderness for everyone, forever’. You can find more information about the Hike-a-Thon on the Bruce Trail Conservancy’s website.
On October 6th, it’s our annual celebration of the Bruce Trail, which is Canada’s oldest and longest footpath. This year, CHBTC is hosting its Bruce Trail Day celebrations at Gosling Forest and Nature Reserve. At our Bruce Trail day festivities, you’ll be able to enjoy a hike (we have a variety of lengths and themes to choose from), activities for children (help us build bluebird nesting boxes), on-site displays (learn about biodiversity initiatives), games for young hikers (crafts and scavenger hunts), and learn about the Bruce Trail Conservancy at our info booth. Oh, and if you’re worried that all this is going to work up an appetite, there’s an all-day barbecue, too.
If you’re looking for an activity that gets you thinking about conservation, then our fall film fundraiser on Sunday, October 20th in Elora is just the ticket. We have two thought-provoking films to choose from this year, along with the option to join us again for brunch if you’re attending the afternoon showing. BTC’s new CEO, Michael McDonald will open each film with a short talk about precious lands preserved and species at risk protected by the BTC and its volunteers.
There’s so much to do this fall with Caledon Hills Bruce Trail Club, and it all sounds so exciting. Won’t you join us?
